Every year, 1.3 million youths across the country run away from home. In Texas, more than 100,000 youth, ages 7 to 17 run away annually. The U.S. conference of Mayor's Hunger and Homelessness survey 2005 reported in San Antonio 2,517 unaccompanied youth registered with a homeless service provider that year - teens who actually sought help from a provider. Hundreds of youth in our community never seek help. They stay with friends, typically going back and forth from one friend's home to another, until they outstay their welcome.
Running away . . . a plea for help l Physical abuse l Difficulties with parents l Peer pressure l School l Drugs l Sexual abuse l Alcoholism l Sexual identity l Getting thrown out These are only a few of the many reasons why young people run away from home. Most are not running to something, but away from overwhelming problems.
