The Lord’s Amazing Touch
Growing up in Dallas was truly an adventure. I attended Dallas South Oak Cliff High School where I was a part of the State Basketball Team, which won back-to-back championships back in the day. On my free Saturdays, you could always find me and my teammates playing pickup ball against “the boys,” which included Dennis Rodman and Spud Webb. Yes, I graduated with the "Bad Boy."
I moved to San Antonio in 1985 with my first husband, who played basketball for St. Mary's University. The marriage ended in divorce in 1992 and I decided to remain in San Antonio because I loved the atmosphere and the people.
In 1999, my life completely changed. I was still active playing sports, namely, basketball, volleyball, and flag football. I went home for my 20 year high school reunion and two weeks later I had to return for my father's funeral. He died, suddenly, from a stroke.
My mother, a retired nurse, noticed that I was getting up slowly. She looked at my hands and said I needed to see a doctor, because I had rheumatoid arthritis. When I returned home, I went to the doctor and was diagnosed. She was right and it had already damaged my left foot and was aggressively damaging my hands.
Within two weeks, I was barely walking at all. When I went to the podiatrist (foot doctor) he said my feet looked like they belonged to a seventy-year-old and I had to get the arthritis under control or I would be wheelchair bound in two years. I told him my God said I would fight this battle.
I had to have surgery on my left foot and it had to be completely rebuilt, which meant I had to re-learn how to walk. I felt like I had been put out into the wilderness and, during this time, I realized that my God was in total control. He revealed to me how I had been worshipping my workplace, USAA, and not giving Him my all. He also revealed how life is so precious and that we should never take anything for granted. I give him all the honor and all the praise and when I think about His goodness, I have to "Shout, Hallelujah, Thank You Jesus."
Learning how to walk and deal with arthritis was a challenge and I thank God for putting my feet back on Higher Ground. My body still aches, but it is always calmed down by my Lord’s amazing touch.
