The Journey to God’s Will

Ephesians 1:3-12

# 1 question people ask God: “What is your will for my life?”

Finding God’s will doesn’t happen overnight. It is a journey. Just as there a road markers along a highway, there are spiritual markers along our journey. We must value each marker as an important factor in finding God’s will to our lives.

Spiritual Marker # 1: Decision, the Pursuit of God

“For he chose us in him.” (Ephesians 1:4)

Just as the Lord has chosen us, we need to choose to pursue Him.

“The great thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving.”  Oliver Wendell Holmes

Spiritual Marker # 2: Direction, the Plan for His Will

“In accordance with his pleasure and will.”  (v. 5)

“according to the plan of Him.” (v. 11)

“The place of agreement is the place of power.”  Dr. Ed Cole

Three levels of prayer:               Level 1: Petition

                                                Level 2: Devotion

                                                Level 3: Intercession

Spiritual Marker # 3: Dream, the Passion for the Vision

“He made known to us the mystery of his will.” (v. 9)

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Spiritual Marker # 4: Dedication, the Patience for His Timing

“when the times will have reached their fulfillment.” (v. 10)

“Never think that God’s delays are God’s denials. Hold on. Hold fast. Hold out. Patience is genius.” George Louis De Buffon

2 Peter 3:8 says, “With the Lord day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like a day.”

God’s timing is different than our timing.  If God has given you a promise, you can count on it – He is faithful! He doesn’t forget His promises. What I love about the Lord is that He has selective memory. He forgets the sins of my past, but remembers His promises for my destiny.

A wrong decision at the wrong time = disaster

Driving 40 miles an hour in a School Zone with a police officer watching you,

is a wrong decision at the wrong time.

A wrong decision at the right time = disagreement

Charging $ 1,000.00 on your MasterCard to buy clothes at the Foley’s

Red Apple Sale is a wrong decision at the right time.

A right decision at the wrong time = disorder

Starting the Atkins diet on Thanksgiving morning is a right decision, but at the

   wrong time.

A right decision at the right time = destiny!

Sharing your faith with your friend who is not saved and just lost his job, is a

right decision at the right time, and it will result in their eternal destiny.

Spiritual Marker # 5: Discipline, the Principles for His Promises.  “with all wisdom and understanding” (v. 8)

“having been predestined according to the plan of him.” (v. 11)

Many people ask the Lord and ask others about the will of God, but they fail to check out the Word of God.  God’s Word is filled with His promises – you simply need to check them out.

“A calling: everything we are, everything we do, and everything we have is invested with a special devotion to His summons and service.”  Os Guiness

Spiritual Marker # 6: Determination, the Perseverance for the Journey.     “who works out everything” (v. 11)

“Even in the midst of the storm, the sun is still there. Above the clouds, it still shines and warms. The clouds cannot stay forever.” Gloria Gaither

Even when times get tough, we’ve got to hang in there.

Spiritual Marker # 7: Destiny, the Purpose for Your Life

“There are two great days in a person’s life – the day we are born, and the day we discover why.”  William Barclay

The Destiny Principle:

Sow a thought, reap an act.  Sow an act, reap a habit.

Sow a habit, reap a character.  Sow a character, reap a lifestyle.

Sow a lifestyle, reap a destiny!

God’s will is not just a destiny, it is a journey. The lessons you learn in getting there is just as important as getting there.
